How To Recognise Personal Development and Growth

What do personal development and growth really mean?

You’ve probably heard the term ‘personal development and growth‘ but what does it really mean and how do we recognise it in ourselves and others?

Simply put, personal development refers to any activity or behaviour that enables you to be the best version of YOU and live an empowered life that’s based on authenticity and tackling those goals. Unsurprisingly, personal development is an ongoing job, and we don’t miraculously end up at some perfect destination.

Personal development and growth can be tough, there is no denying that, but the rewards are always worth it. Ultimately, it’s about creating better habits as 95 % of our actions are determined by our daily routines. Thus, changing our habits can change our lives.

Leading self-development author Brian Tracy reflects on the importance of self-development and growth, noting that:

“personal development is a major time-saver. The better you become, the less time it takes you to achieve your goals.”

Upskilling yourself in terms of your career, focusing on your mental health, enhancing your physical wellbeing, and expanding your social networks, all fall under the broad category of personal development and growth. Ultimately, personal development and growth seem to fall into five primary categories, namely mental, social, spiritual, physical, and emotional but how do we know when we’re winning at life and embarking on growth? The following signs might be worth noting, even if some seem uncomfortable.

  1. You’re open to different beliefs and don’t get defensive

Growing curiosity and openness to different views are key signs that you’re growing and developing. As you develop and grow, you will be more open to other ideas and perspectives. Consequently, you will be open to new ways of thinking without getting defensive. Of course, you do not have to agree with everyone and everything but your ability to consider other options and situations will expand. As such, you’ll be more open to new experiences and possibilities and this will enhance your world.

  1. You’re letting go of unproductive habits

Additionally, you will begin to let go of detrimental habits that no longer serve you. Perhaps you’ll forgo that second glass of wine on a weeknight, bike to work instead of catching the train, choose to stop complaining and instead find solutions to problems, or swop the snooze button for a morning meditation session. In doing so, you will make room for more positive behaviours and connections. Consequently, growth and development will follow.

  1. Your relationships are changing

Predictably, your relationships might start changing as you begin to grow. Naturally, some will change for the better and become stronger, and others might take a back seat. Nonetheless, the ebb and flow of relationships is part of life, and sometimes personal growth and development enable you to make more meaningful connections and let go of ones that no longer support your visions. Taking your growth seriously allows you to fill your life with positive people who support your dreams and elevate your goals.

  1. You’re more at peace

Furthermore, you might start to feel a greater sense of peace. People and annoyances that used to trigger you and ruin your day you might be less worrisome. Sensitivity and anger no longer have the same grip on you as you realise that we’re all growing and developing at different paces. As such, relationships will improve, and your peace of mind will be protected. Undeniably, greater peace can lead to greater productivity and happiness.

  1. You’re focused on the journey and no longer the destination

Perhaps most noteworthy of all is your enjoyment of the process. Naturally, you start enjoying the journey and allow life to unfold. As the famed American Tennis player Arthur Ashe once said: “Success is a journey, not a destination. The doing is often more important than the outcome.”

CONCLUSION about Personal development and Growth

Personal development and growth are not always easy, but they are certainly always worth it. If you have been experiencing any of these 5 things, you might just be on this exciting path.
